Theology of Sickness and Healing

This sermon reflects on the bibles teaching on sickness and healing. Dwelling on this truth provides Christian’s with steadfast comfort and hope to stand on.

The first part of this sermon addresses the origin of sickness. Sickness originates from the sin of mankind that consequentially leads to death. Therefore, all humans are born into bodies that will decay albeit in differing ways, this includes Christian’s who have been made inwardly alive by the Holy Spirit.

There are instances in the bible where an individuals sickness is directly linked to their sin. However, most sicknesses don’t occur as a result of personal sin, but as a consequence of the universal sin of mankind. In a complex picture, both God and satan in scripture cause sickness to occur. Yet, we can always trust that God is sovereign, in control, and using all situations for good.

The second part of this sermon addresses how Christian’s should respond to the reality of sickness. Firstly, we are called to not believe falsehoods that teach every illness and sickness can be cast out. There are instances of Christian’s remaining sick in scripture including in the life of Paul.

Secondly, we are called to persevere even when instant healing doesn’t come. We do this by continuing to pray for healing, by asking others to pray for us, by submitting to God affirming his perfect plan is still being worked out in this season of your life, by being joyful despite our circumstances, by being dependent on God, and by supporting others in the church who are unwell.

Thirdly, we are called to expect miraculous healings that lead to God being glorified. We are instructed to pray for the sick to be healed in the name of Jesus knowing that God can.

Lord, help us to have an increasingly Godly understanding of sickness and healing.
