This sermon looks at the potential outcomes of God’s Word being proclaimed to us and through us.
Jesus speaks of three soils in this parable that lead to negative outcomes. Firstly, God’s Word can fall on the path. We can be robbed instantly by not receiving or listening to God. Secondly, God’s Word can fall on the rocky ground. Despite an initial positive response, no deep roots are formed and thus heart transformation hasn’t taken place. So, when faced with trial, persecution, and troubles these people depart from the Word. Thirdly, God’s Word can be choked by the thorns of life. This is where we put idols before Jesus relegating him to second place in our lives.
Jesus then speaks of and encourages us to be good soil. We are instructed to be those who carefully hear, accept, and put into action God’s Word. For everyone who has a heart of good soil we can expect to be fruitful for God as we imitate his example of faithfully sowing wherever we go.
Lord, help us to have hearts of good soil, and to faithfully sow your Word wherever we go.
