This sermon instructs and encourages us to love God with every part of ourselves holding nothing back.
God called his people then and calls his people now to love him with everything we have. This isn’t because God is needy and yearning for our love. But because he alone is deserving of it and it is the only place we will be truly fulfilled. Practically this looks like giving every part of our heart (motivations for actions and moral decisions), mind (what we giving time to thinking about), soul (our internal immaterial desires), and might (our physical/emotional/spiritual strength) to loving God.
It is of course impossible for us to follow this commandment perfectly! Praise God, in and through Jesus Christ, we have one who did fulfil it. Thus, for all who believe in him, our hearts have been made new and reflect Jesus’ righteousness. Until we reach eternity, the Holy Spirit helps equip and empower us, to live out this commandment in greater measure.
Lord, sorry for where we have replaced you as the rightful recipient of our love, help us to abound in living lives dedicated to loving you.
