Prayer, Power, Pity | Mark 1:35-45

This sermon dwells on the glorious power and pity of Jesus working harmoniously together to cleanse.

Prior to cleansing a leper, Jesus withdraws from the crowds, to spend time with God the Father in prayer. He prioritises his personal relationship with God. This is a consistent theme of his earthly ministry.

Fuelled by this time, Jesus then sets about restoring an unclean leper to the community of God. The leper is currently excluded from the people of God because he is ritually unclean. But Jesus, moved with gut wrenching compassion for this leper, cleanses his body allowing him to enter into the community of God again.

This encounter demonstrates that Jesus is always willing to cleanse the unclean. For this is the very reason he came to earth, to make a way by which all who believe in him can have their sins cleansed. To make a way by which we can enjoy God’s presence and be reintegrated into God’s community.

Lord, we are so thankful for your power and pity that has cleansed us from our sins. Help us to follow your example by taking this good news of cleansing to everyone around us.
