This sermon unpacks Jesus’ words of encouragement to the Church in Philadelphia. This Church was operating in a city where mission was baked into its DNA as it was surrounded by pagan worshipping neighbours.
Jesus commends this Church for its perseverance, endurance, faithfulness, and hard work. As the only authoritative key holder he promises them the reward of an open door that no one can shut. This is further opportunity for missionary work, proclaiming the good news of the Gospel, and seeing the unstoppable kingdom of God advance.
He encourages the Church in Philadelphia to continue on in these things reminding them of their Godly inheritance. This includes that their earthly deeds will reap heavenly rewards, they will dwell for all eternity in God’s presence, and God’s new name will be written on them as an eternal sign we are his.
Lord, help us to imitate these qualities in Our Church, walking through all the doors you have opened for us.
