Idolatry | Deuteronomy 4

This sermon draws out truth and wisdom from Moses’ teaching on idolatry as he speaks to God’s people.

Idolatry is defined as worshipping created things. This occurs when we put created things like family, relationships, work/career, money, and ministry success as the number one priority in our lives. These are the things we draw most joy and satisfaction from. They are also the things we couldn’t do without if God was to take them away from us.

This a destructive and futile path because only God is worthy of our worship. He alone created the heavens and the earth, he alone is all powerful, all seeing, and all knowing. Furthermore, worshipping God is where he has created us to be most happy, joyful, and fulfilled in life. This is what motivates God’s loving jealousy for our worship in wanting the best for us.

The consequence of following this idolatrous path will only end in God giving us over to more idolatry. He will also righteously consume and devour everything unholy that remains. However, rich in mercy and love God provides a way back through belief in Jesus Christ. If we repent of these things and turn back to God he will forgive us our sins.

Lord, help us to put you in your rightful place in our lives, and forsake all idols that might get in the way.
