This sermon through the story of Abraham calls us to embrace times where our faith is tested. To see these as opportunities to reveal and deepen our heart commitment to God.
God makes an extraordinary request of Abraham that tests his faith. He asks him to sacrifice his son and the heir of God’s long time promise to multiply his descendants across the nations. This request is not about Abraham actually having to sacrifice his son, but instead a heart check for Abraham to see if he really trusts God.
This is a test Abraham comes through because he trusts the promiser more than he trusts the promise! He knew what he had heard from God, so set about doing it, trusting that God’s way is best, and that he would provide. God did indeed provide a lamb in Isaac’s place to foreshadow Jesus’ laying down his life for us.
Lord, help us to have ears to hear you, and hearts to be obedient, so that you may be glorified in our lives.
