The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is fundamental to the Christian faith all year round not just at Easter. Therefore, this sermon explores numerous cries leading up to the cross, from the cross, and because of the cross.
Leading up to the cross there were cries of indecision and disappointment. Pilate tried to avoid making a decision about who Jesus was making a cry absolving himself of any responsibility for Jesus’ death. The crowds made a murderous cry of “crucify him” because of their disappointment he wasn’t the Saviour King they had expected.
From the cross Jesus made two defiant cries of rejoicing and victory. He made a cry of rejoicing declaring that through his death all humanity could be forgiven from its rebellion through him. He also made a cry of victory declaring his incarnated mission to defeat the hold of sin and death on mankind was complete.
Because of the cross there was a cry heard from heaven in the form of an earthquake that convinced the centurion Jesus truly was God. There were the cries of the dead who were raised demonstrating the cross brings new life. There was also the cry heard from the veil tearing that indicated the life restoring work of Jesus Christ.
Lord, we thank and praise you for Jesus. For his life’s work and all that it achieved. Help us today to learn from these cries in a way that brings us closer to you.
