Appeal for Unity | Philippians 2:1-8

This sermon reflects on Paul’s call to the Philippian churches to remain united even when faced with internal disruptions.

Paul begins his argument by asking a series of rhetorical questions. These remind the Philippians that they exist in a shared community formed by God. They have been united in relationship with Christ, they have been lavished with the love of God, they collectively make up a fellowship of the Spirit, and they have love & concern for one another.

Therefore, Paul now calls this God formed community to make his joy complete by continuing on in unity. They are called to demonstrate unity by being of the same mind, maintaining love for one another, living harmoniously in the Spirit, and being intent on one central purpose. Unity amongst God’s people is important because it bears witness to the unity of the triune God we serve.

The next part of Paul’s argument provides instruction on how unity can be achieved and maintained. He firstly argues for selfishness and empty conceit to be thrown off as these things disrupt unity. Instead, he makes a call for them to have a humility of mind, that considers others as more important than yourselves, and which considers the interests of others.

Paul concludes his argument by reminding the Philippians the action he is calling them to is the attitude that was perfectly demonstrated by Christ Jesus. The eternal Son of God chose to lay aside the divine privileges of heaven humbling himself to come on a rescue mission where he was ridiculed and mocked to the point of dying on a cross. He lowered himself in this way, considering us as more important, and thinking of our interests.

Lord, help us to hear and respond to this appeal for unity, so that we might show the world who you are.
