This sermon encourages us to trust that God is working in the midst of every storm.
We all experience storms in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons in life. However, one certainty remains amongst all storms, God uses them to achieve his perfect plans. These plans and purposes aren’t always visible to us. But we are encouraged to seize every challenge presented by a storm trusting in and looking for God.
The experience of Jonah teaches us three ways we can face storms. Firstly, we can react by devoting ourselves to prayer, to declaring God’s goodness, and by having a heart to see God in it. This is in contrast to reacting by seeing ourselves as the solution or burying our heads in the sand.
Secondly, we can reflect upon the storms we and/or our family and friends have faced. By reflecting, we can learn lessons from the past for current and future storms we will face. This process will remind us of the goodness of God, that he is working in every situation, and that we can trust in him.
Thirdly, there may be a need to repent of behaviour that got us into the storm and/or our behaviour during the storm. We know God is merciful to forgive us when we come to him and confess our sin.
Lord, help us to be those who trust and look for you in amongst every storm we face in life.
