Jesus, The Doctor For Sinners | Mark 2:13-17

This sermon reminds us that the salvation of Jesus Christ is for anyone and everyone.

In these verses Jesus calls Levi, an unclean, corrupt tax collector, most likely walking outside of his calling to follow him. Levi wasn’t even seeking for Jesus. Yet, when Jesus calls him, he immediately and sacrificially leaves all he is doing to follow Jesus.

Levi’s first action following this is to gather a group of his tax collector friends for dinner at his house so they can meet Jesus too. In doing so, he shows part of what it is to follow Jesus, bringing people to Jesus especially those from our work places.

The response of the Pharisees is to judge and question Jesus’ decision to meet with people they considered to be some of societies worst sinners. However, Jesus makes clear the people he has come to heal are humble sinners aware of their need for him.

Lord, thank you for coming as a doctor to heal sinners like me. Help me to be prayerfully humble and to use every opportunity to show people who you are.
