This sermon focuses on Jesus’ call at the beginning of his ministry to follow him.
Jesus first makes a public call announcing his arrival as the long awaited Saviour King. He declares his everlasting kingdom is soon to be ushered in by his eternally conquering actions on the cross. The call is for everyone to respond to this by following Jesus through repenting and believing.
Jesus then makes two private calls to two pairs of fishermen. He calls them to follow him and they respond immediately to Jesus’ call. In doing so they leave security, work, and family behind. They do this because they see who Jesus is and the amazing gift it is to be called to follow him.
Jesus doesn’t simply call these fishermen to follow him, he calls them to become fishers of men. They like all followers of Jesus are called to a great work calling more people to hear the good news about Jesus.
Lord, help us to be wholehearted and sacrificial followers of you, the glorious Saviour King who laid it all down for us.
